Toondoo

Toondoo

Toondoo is a web 2.0 tool that creates comic books.  It is like Comic Life but it's online.  The selection for people, for different backgrounds is huge, much bigger then Comic Life.  But Comic Life has many different ways of setting up the comics, having six sections or more for creating the comics.  Toondoo has 1, 2 or 3 squares to make the comics.  You can make a comic book (more then 2 pages) online, and it is easy to put the toondoo's in the books, it's just limited with the set up of the comic.  But the pictures and people are better in Toondoo.  You have people that are real (religious people, famous people, or just plain people) or if you like you can create your own.  The hair color, hair shape, skin color, clothing, etc.  No cartoon will be the same.

You have bubbles for discussions as well as thought bubbles.  I used this program to create a comic book on cyber bullying with my students.  My marking system was simple and that was it.  :

5 pages  ..................................................................          /5
a background on each one.......................................         /2
2 different caracters.................................................         /2
Talking bubbles.......................................................         /4
Thinking bubble......................................................         /2
There is a lesson on cyber bullying that makes sense.......         /5
There are no spelling errors....................................          /5
                  TOTAL...........................   25.

 We had fun....

Just a quick note - when doing the cartoon book, you need to do the toondoo maker first.  Make your entire comic book in sections of 1, 2 or 3 squares.  Then when all are done, you make the book.  See the example to see what a  book looks like.  This book is only 3 pages.  I asked for 5 pages in my book.

This program does take time, especially when students are making their own characters.  Make sure students also understand what cyber bullying is.  Some of my students did bullying alone, even after a discussion on cyber-bullying.
